The joke's on you.

Atticus and Delilah were colleagues in the office, but over the past several months, they have become the best of friends. No one ever expected Delilah to be such a jokester because she was always so serious, until Atticus was hired, that is.

Atticus was determined to bring Delilah out of her shell. She was mostly annoyed by him at first but he eventually grew on her. He would sit with her at lunch, pulling out his best jokes, until he had her laughing. It wasn't hard to get her laughing, but at work, she wanted to maintain her professional demeanor.

On Delilah's birthday, Atticus came into work early to decorate her office but instead, filled her office with balloons, top to bottom, with the help of other co-workers. Delilah came into work, opened her door, and balloons flooded out of her office all over the hallway. She erupted in laughter! No one at the office had ever heard her laugh so genuinely. Sitting on her desk was a cake with Atticus' face on it, she began laughing even harder.

A few days later, it was Atticus' birthday. He never expected Delilah to retaliate, but she returned the prank, by setting up a glitter gun to go off when he opened his office door ... glitter EVERYWHERE! Atticus loved it!

For several months, the two would exchange pranks. Everything from gluing all of the pens together, post-it noting desks, foghorns on chairs, mayonnaise filled donuts, to name a few; the whole office was entertained by all of the pranks between Atticus and Delilah. These small, well-meaning pranks turned serious when Aric, a co-worker who had a crush on this newly surfaced Delilah, left a caramel-covered onion, which looked very much like a candy apple, on Atticus' desk one day. Aric had heard Atticus tell Delilah that he loved candy apples, but hadn't been able to find any since moving to the area. When Atticus saw the candy apple on his desk, he got a big smile on his face and immediately opened it up, took a big bite ... full of onion! Atticus was severely allergic to onions, and as soon as he realized what was happening, he was already gasping for air. Delilah came running to his rescue, calling 9-1-1, trying to keep him calm. Delilah knew he was allergic to onions, and when he was being whisked off to the hospital for treatment, he pushed Delilah away. Confused, she began to cry, not understanding why Atticus would do that. Aric came over to comfort Delilah, asking her what she did, as if to say that she played that prank on Atticus. She recalled seeing Aric going into Atticus' office earlier in the morning, and she turned to him, disgusted by actions, pushing him away, running to her supervisor to see if she could leave to be with Atticus at the hospital.

Delilah was hoping that he would allow her to explain that the prank wasn't hers. When she got to the hospital, Atticus was hooked up to machines, helping him breathe, and asleep from the medicine he was given to counteract the effects of the allergic reaction he had. She sat at his bedside, holding his hand, praying for him to wake up and be ok. He finally woke up, 3 days later, Delilah never left his side. She smiled at him and asked if she could explain. He nodded for her to proceed. When she explained that Aric was the one behind the prank, Atticus became very angry. His speech was still difficult to understand, but he told Delilah that he had overheard Aric talking to someone on the phone in the break room saying that was going to find a way to make her his girl. Naturally, she reacted with rage, saying she would never, in a million years, be pulled in by Aric. She knew that he was only interested in one thing when he went on a date with women, he flaunted it all over the office, and after what he pulled with Atticus, she would definitely never give him the time of day.

A few days later, Atticus was released from the hospital, Delilah there to escort him home and getting him all settled, she ordered a pizza, cracked open a couple of beers and the two started to talk about what happened.  They plotted sweet revenge for Aric, while it was fun to come up with different ways of getting back at him, Delilah conceded, saying that she didn't want to stoop to his level; Atticus agreed.  They sat there talking for several more hours when Atticus turned to Delilah and said, "Hey, would you want to go out on a date with me, like, a real date? I mean we get along so well, we laugh, have fun, and enjoy each other's company, so what do ya say?" Delilah, pondering the thought, but having never really thought of him that way, said "ya know what, yea, let's see if we can make this work ... and as an added bonus, it'll drive Aric insane!" They both laughed.

From that point forward, they spent pretty much every waking hour together, but Delilah had gotten a promotion at work, so they were no longer working in the same office, and Aric had pushed his own agenda far enough to get himself fired, so Atticus was able to comfortably return to his position, but learning from Delilah's mindset, kept things very professional in the workplace.   Every now and again, all the fun times of the office pranks between Atticus and Delilah were reminisced over, bringing much-needed laughter to the office.

Atticus and Delilah naturally kept their pranks going, outside of the workplace, so it was no surprise when Atticus proposed to Delilah with an exploding cake that popped a ring out when she cut into it. She couldn't have thought of a better way to propose.
